Downspout Cleanouts
Downspout cleanouts are additional sections of a downspout that connect the end of the downspout to the underground drain, preventing debris from flowing into the underground drain system.
Cleanouts are installed about 3-5 feet from the ground making it easy to clear out debris periodically.
The purpose of the cleanout is to catch debris flowing from the upper gutter system before it gets passed into the underground drain system. If leaves, twigs and other debris flow down the downspout, they can create clogs and cause water to back up creating pooling and flooding around the home’s foundation.
There are many dangers of standing water near your home’s foundation, including:
- Cracking and damage to the foundation itself
- Flooding in basement and crawlspace
- Damage to siding
- Mold growth
- Cracks in ceiling or walls caused by damaged and settling foundation
Having a functional gutter system that includes downspout cleanouts to move water away from the home and keep debris out of the drains, is the best way to prevent damage to the foundation, siding and home.
